Nasal congestion is a common health problem that negatively affects the quality of life of many people. It can lead to many problems such as constant difficulty breathing, interrupted sleep at night, feeling tired during the day and even lack of concentration.
Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Ufuk Askeroğlu explains the common things that everyone with nasal congestion should know.
What causes nasal congestion?
Nasal congestion can be caused by different reasons:
Nasal curvature (septum deviation); congenital or acquired nasal cartilage and bone curvatures narrow the airway and make breathing difficult.
Turbinate hypertrophy; the growth of the turbinates that regulate air flow in the nose can cause nasal congestion.
Chronic sinusitis; sinus inflammations that do not go away for a long time can lead to nasal congestion.
Allergic rhinitis; Reactions to allergens such as dust, pollen, and pet hair can cause blockage by causing edema in the nasal mucosa.
How does nasal congestion affect quality of life?
Not being able to breathe comfortably through the nose can cause many negative consequences for the body. Constantly breathing through the mouth can lead to dry throat and frequent infections, while poor sleep quality can cause problems such as fatigue and headaches during the day. In addition, additional health problems such as respiratory problems, oxygen deficiency, and snoring may develop in the long term.
These problems can be treated
One of the modern techniques to eliminate nasal congestion today is ultrasonic rhinoplasty. Unlike traditional nose surgeries, this method performs bone shaping much more precisely using ultrasonic waves. It causes less damage to the tissue compared to classical surgery, and bruising and edema are minimal. It provides better airflow by naturally correcting the nasal structure. It offers a more comfortable recovery process compared to classical surgeries.
