Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Ufuk Askeroğlu explains what can be done to slow down the signs of aging.
As time goes by, the skin naturally ages; however, there are many ways to slow down this process. Skin aging is affected by internal changes in the body as well as external factors. Lifestyle choices, skin care routines and correct habits play an important role in preserving the youthfulness of the skin.
Sun protection: The first step
The harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun are one of the biggest causes of skin aging. Prolonged exposure to the sun reduces the elasticity of the skin and accelerates the formation of wrinkles. Therefore, it is essential to use sunscreen regularly, regardless of summer or winter months, to protect your skin. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with a protection factor of at least SPF 30 should be preferred. In addition, avoiding direct sunlight during the hours when the sun is strongest (10:00-16:00) will be beneficial for skin health. Wearing a hat and sunglasses will also protect your skin more.
Balanced diet: Beauty from within
A healthy diet plays a key role in keeping your skin bright and youthful. Foods rich in antioxidants help protect your skin from free radicals. Antioxidants, especially vitamins C and E, renew skin cells and slow down the aging process of the skin. Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, walnuts and chia seeds should be consumed to keep the skin moist and flexible. Drinking plenty of water also keeps the skin moist, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Moisturizing and skin care: The importance of daily routines
As the skin ages, it begins to lose its natural moisture. Moisture loss causes the skin to become drier, thinner and more prone to wrinkles. To prevent this, it is important to use a moisturizer suitable for your skin type. Moisturizing products strengthen the skin barrier and help the skin maintain its elasticity. In addition, exfoliating once or twice a week to get rid of dead skin accelerates the renewal process of skin cells and provides a brighter skin appearance.
Regular exercise and sleep: The key to healthy skin
Regular exercise increases blood circulation, allowing the skin to receive oxygen and nutrients. This helps the skin look healthy and youthful. In addition, exercise positively affects skin health by reducing stress hormones. Sleep is also vital for skin health. Adequate sleep ensures the renewal of skin cells and prevents a tired appearance. A good sleep routine at night also prevents the formation of under-eye bags and dark circles.
Watch out for skin enemies!
Smoking reduces blood flow in the skin, causing skin cells to not receive enough nutrition. In addition, smoking prevents collagen production in the skin and causes early wrinkles. Alcohol consumption disrupts the skin’s moisture balance, dries the skin and causes the skin to lose elasticity. Therefore, it is important to quit smoking and alcohol consumption or reduce it to a minimum level in order to slow down the skin’s aging process.
Stress management is also important for our skin!
Stress leads to an increase in stress hormones such as cortisol in the body, which can accelerate the skin’s aging process. During stressful periods, skin redness, acne and wrinkles may become more noticeable. Stress management methods such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises and taking up hobbies help maintain both mental and skin health.
Professional help to slow down skin aging
There are various skin care treatments and aesthetic applications recommended by your doctor for skin that shows more advanced signs of aging. Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a frequently used method to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes and prevent them from deepening. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers restore volume loss seen in the cheekbones, jawline and nose-mouth line, giving the face a youthful appearance. Laser treatments help skin renewal and lighten blemishes by increasing collagen production, while chemical peeling provides a fresher appearance by cleansing the skin from dead cells. PRP treatment, on the other hand, provides a firmer and brighter skin appearance by injecting plasma obtained from the patient’s own blood into the skin.
