Follow Post-Op Instructions Carefully
Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative instructions based on extensive clinical experience. These instructions are essential for optimal healing and the best possible results. Follow them precisely.
Pain Management
Take prescribed pain medication as directed. Most patients find they need pain medication primarily for the first 2-3 days, with minimal discomfort afterward. Don’t wait until pain is severe—staying ahead of pain is more effective.
Swelling Management
Ice therapy is your best tool during the first week. Apply ice for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off during waking hours. Sleep with your head elevated on 3-4 pillows to help reduce swelling. Head elevation is one of the most effective swelling reduction techniques.
Incision Care
Keep incisions clean and dry for the first 10 days. After suture removal, gently cleanse with mild soap and water. Follow any recommended scar minimization product protocols.
Nutrition & Hydration
Eat nutritious foods rich in vitamins, protein, and minerals to support healing. Stay well-hydrated. Vitamin C and protein are particularly important for collagen formation and optimal healing.
Activity Progression
Don’t rush back to strenuous exercise. While some activity is good for preventing stiffness, pushing too hard too soon can increase swelling and bruising. Progress gradually as outlined in this timeline.
Sun Protection
Protect incisions from sun exposure for at least 2-3 months. UV exposure on healing incisions can cause permanent discoloration. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen and consider wearing a hat when outdoors.
Sleep Position
Sleep with your head elevated on 3-4 pillows for the first 2 weeks to minimize swelling. Avoid sleeping on your stomach or sides.
Avoid Smoking & Alcohol
Smoking impairs healing and should be avoided entirely during recovery. Alcohol can interact with pain medication and should be avoided while taking these medications.
